This week was rough. For many of us, it’s been hard to sit still under the weight of everything happening. So I just want to remind you, gently but firmly, that the only antidote to existential dread is action.
When the world feels like it’s spinning out, action centers us. One foot in front of the other. Drink water. Eat your veggies. And if rage or fear is bubbling up inside of you, let it move you toward something productive - something that builds up our communities, strengthens our democracy, and reminds us we are not powerless.
Today, one of our Houston organizers couldn’t sit with the weight of the week. So they made sandwiches and went to City Hall to hand them out. A few people from the community joined in. No big plan, no mass mobilization - just care turned into action.
Moments like that - when we come together not because we’re unshaken, but because we have no other choice - remind us why we keep going. We must keep going. If we don’t, we risk falling apart. A better future is possible, but only if we show up, in community, and fight for each other.
Since January, strangers have been coming together with one shared question: What now?
We live in unprecedented times. First, someone shows up at a protest, energized and ready to lead. Then they pause, listen, and see what others have built. Slowly, they find their place. It’s not always glamorous. But it’s real, and it is happening every day here in Houston.
So here’s a snapshot of what this growing, scrappy, committed local movement has done in just four months:
Some highlights from the 50501 Houston community:
Swap Meet & Skill Share (monthly): Started by one of our founding members (and now a dear friend), this event brings folks together to share what we have and teach each other new skills. We've learned to make mats from grocery bags for our unhoused neighbors, how to papier-mâché, and this month we’ll be sewing easy-care bags.
Community support:
Donations to Houston Food Bank, Food Not Bombs & Meals on Wheels
Ongoing summer food drive
2 Queer Nights, 2 Swap Meets (3rd on the way)
1,000+ postcards and 100+ handwritten letters sent to reps and the White House
Mobilization:
Over 10,000 people across events
Collaborations with 20+ activist groups
8 protests led, 4 co-led, countless more supported
5 trips to Austin to fight for our rights (plus non-stop online organizing)
Grassroots fundraising from day one - we started with nothing, just passion and purpose. We are not an org or an official group. Just Houstonians coming together in these trying times.
This work is imperfect, human, joyful, exhausting, and necessary. And we’re just getting started.
If you’ve been on the sidelines wondering where to begin - start here. Start with us. Show up at one of our events and ask how to get involved. We’re building something. And you’re invited.
Join us this Saturday, rain or shine, for our No Kings Day event as we come together peacefully to reject authoritarian overreach, the dismantling of due process, and the suppression of our First Amendment rights.
Please stay engaged and get organized: Ground News provides headlines from every news source to help you see blind spots and stay informed without the noise. 5 Calls provides scripts and will help you contact your representative. 50501 Houston can help you find actions and orgs in your community.
